WEST BRANCH, MI – Ogemaw Heights likes to play in high gear.
But sometimes its shifts into Hud gear.
And there’s no keeping up with Hudson Hodgins and the Falcons when they are motoring in Hud gear.
“There were a couple games where we just had him take over,” Ogemaw coach Mike Weiler said. “I’d say ‘Now’s the time. It’s you. Don’t be afraid to kick it out to your teammates, but go to work.’”
When the 6-foot-1, 185-pound junior was clicking, nobody piled up the points better than Hodgins. His 22.6 points per game during regular season play earned him the MLive Bay City area boys basketball scoring crown for 2021-22.
He is the first player from Ogemaw to lead the 26-school area in scoring since Pete VanOosten in 2008. Hodgins finished second to Hale’s David Wanty by 3-tenths of a point last season.

Hodgins gets it done in a variety of ways, with the ability to get to the rim off the drive or deliver from long range. At times, his long range is well beyond the 19-foot-9 arc.
“Against Tawas, you can see in the video (Tawas coach Todd Kaems) saying ‘Can somebody guard him?’” Weiler said. “Then he hit one from the sponsor’s logo and Todd said ‘How far out do I have to guard this guy?’ And I’m thinking ‘Well, I guess a little further.’
“Once he gets its going, he can chuck it from pretty deep.”
Also a baseball standout for the Falcons, Hodgins is far from one-dimensional on the court. If he notches 40 assists next season, he will graduate among Ogemaw’s top 10 in every statistical category.
He delivered a 19-rebound game and has two eight-steal games, an Ogemaw record. And, at 872 career points with another season ahead of him, he has a chance to catch VanOosten as the program’s all-time leading scorer.
“He’s shaping up to be one of the most well-rounded players we’ve ever had at Ogemaw,” Weiler said. “He does a bit of it all.”
Hodgins hit one of the program’s most memorable shots of all-time as a freshman, drilling a 3-point buzzer beater in double overtime to knock off previously undefeated Oscoda in 2020. But that would only be the beginning, as he’s had the Falcons playing in Hud gear ever since.
